In recent years, society has made significant strides towards understanding and accepting the diverse spectrum of gender identities. For individuals whose gender identity differs from their assigned sex at birth, the journey towards self-discovery and authenticity often includes undergoing gender confirming surgery. I had my surgery in February 2022. This transformative procedure not only aligns physical appearance with one's true self but also has the power to save lives in profound and meaningful ways. It changed my life with such a positive force and cured me of decades of dysphoria that now, living as me, I am the happiest I have ever been.
Gender dysphoria, the distress experienced when one's gender identity doesn't match their physical body, can have severe and lasting impacts on mental health. The struggle to fit into societal norms, coupled with the internal conflict of not feeling true to oneself, can lead to anxiety, depression, and even suicidal thoughts. Gender confirming surgery offers a lifeline by providing an avenue for individuals to alleviate this mental anguish. Research has shown that those who undergo such surgeries often experience improved mental well-being, decreased levels of depression and anxiety, and a greater overall quality of life. My own experience backs this up and I know of many, many other people who have gone through the same thing and only report enhanced levels of contentment and happiness.
Transgender individuals face disproportionately high rates of suicide attempts due to the immense challenges they encounter, including discrimination, rejection, and social isolation. I have two failed attempts at ending my life before surgery. Gender confirming surgery has been linked to a significant reduction in suicide risk. A study published in JAMA Surgery in 2016 revealed that transgender individuals who had undergone gender-affirming surgery had a significantly lower suicide rate compared to those who had not yet undergone surgery. This illustrates the life-saving potential of providing access to medical interventions that align individuals' bodies with their gender identities. It really did 'save my life' - Gender dysphoria would of ended me with depression before long.
The journey towards embracing one's true gender identity can be immensely challenging, but gender confirming surgery can be a crucial step in fostering self-acceptance and boosting self-esteem. When individuals look in the mirror and see a reflection that aligns with their internal sense of self, it can lead to a profound sense of empowerment and confidence. Stepping out of the bath used to be a horror show for me. I hated everything I saw and it made me feel physically ill whilst bringing on intense depressive thoughts. After surgery the change is profound.. I am over joyed stepping out of the bath now.. everything is right and everything is correct. This newfound self-assurance often translates into positive social interactions, healthier relationships, and improved overall well-being. For me, I no longer fear the outside world. No longer want to hide away.
Gender confirming surgery is not just about changing one's physical appearance; it also facilitates social integration and acceptance. As individuals align their physical bodies with their gender identities, they are better equipped to navigate the world with authenticity. This alignment often leads to more positive interactions with peers, colleagues, and society at large, which in turn contributes to a sense of belonging and decreased feelings of isolation. It limits the 'impostor' syndrome a lot of transgender individuals feel. It is a statement to yourself and the world, 'this is who I am' and your intent to live this way for the rest of your life. Mistake corrected, cure administered.
In addition to the psychological and social benefits, gender confirming surgery can have positive effects on physical health. For example, hormone therapy and surgical interventions can reduce the risk of certain health issues, such as cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis. By improving overall health and well-being, gender confirming surgery can contribute to increased longevity and a better quality of life.
Gender confirming surgery is a life-changing and life-saving procedure that goes beyond physical transformation. It empowers individuals to live authentically and aligns their external appearance with their true gender identity, which can have far-reaching positive effects on mental health, self-esteem, social integration, and overall well-being. As society continues to progress towards greater inclusivity and understanding, recognising the critical importance of gender confirming surgery in saving lives is an essential step towards creating a world where all individuals can thrive as their authentic selves.
Gender surgeries are not for everyone.. They are not the cure some people need. But for the people it matters too. It is simply life saving. Anyone who would stand in another's way in obtaining this care is, in my eyes, a murderer..
